FW11 trends | Pants

Celine's "Perfect Pants"

Last November, shortly after joining CĂ©line, Phoebe Philo delivered for the label a collection of "Five Perfect Pants", basic styles that every woman should have in her closet. Obviously, however, fashion trends put a specific emphasis on a particular style each season.

Last Fall was the season of the wide-leg pants. This year, they stay strong in a range of 60s-inspired silhouettes that privilege flare, as much as high-waist flared jeans do. You should pair them with big sunglasses and leather boots or booties to reinforce the sixties feeling. Skinny styles of pants, jeans and cords reinvent themselves in a number of colours, from burgundy to "bruciato" (tobacco, in an imperfect translation) passing through liquid blue. Boyfriend jeans should also remain as staples in your wardrobe, and both can be worn either with flats or high heels.

Yet by looking around I noticed that here in Milan everybody, moms and grandmothers alike, are wearing slim ankle or 7/8 pants. By looking more carefully through my sources of fashion information, this seems indeed to be the trendy silhouette this season. This suits me well, for a couple of reasons. First, it is more flattering for my body figure than high-waist and wide-legged styles do. Second, it is an easier style to care for once the weather turns for the worst -- unless you have managed to figure out how to stylishly tuck wide-legged pants into winter boots. My pants' wish list thus include skinny ankle pants in Fall colours (I am particularly obsessed by burgundy these days).
